On Saturday, 29th July 2023, the Honourable Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Professor Pierre Gomez was invited as a special guest of Honour at the 17th Congregation of The Regional Maritime University (RMU) in Accra, Ghana.
This occasion was also attended by the Hon. Minister of Transport, Works and Infrastructure of The Gambia, Hon. Ebrima Sillah. The event was marked by admission to degrees, award of diploma and prizes.
In his speech, Hon. Gomez highlighted that the Regional Maritime University is known to have trained many Gambians who excel in various fields of the Maritime Sector. Most importantly, the President of the Republic of The Gambia, His Excellency Adama Barrow and the first President of The Gambia, Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara, of blessed memory, were honoured by this prestigious University.
Furthermore, he congratulated Regional Maritime University on its 65 year anniversary as an International University and 40 years of its regionalisation.
In addition, Hon. Gomez urged universities and industries to work much more effectively in establishing systematic development links with each other to ensure that academic research is geared towards responding to industries' visible and pressing needs.
Finally, Hon. Gomez congratulated the new graduands for completing their various programmes of study at RMU.
“Today, your efforts are being rewarded through degrees/certificates and diplomas. Your lecturers, parents, guardians, sponsors, and spouses share your joy of becoming new University graduates today. Your respective countries are proud of you,” he encouraged.
