MoHERST Awards Students to pursue Masters Degrees in Malawi

On Friday, 1st September 2023, the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology held an award ceremony for outstanding students to pursue MSc Programs in Fisheries and Agribusiness in Malawi. The scholarship package was acquired by the Ministry through its bilateral relations with its partners. 

 

This university in Malawi is a leading one in East Africa, that is running the Africa Higher Education Centre of Excellence in Fisheries and Agribusiness. 

 

Out of over a hundred applications received, the National Scholarship Advisory Board selected twenty-five (25) students through a rigorous selection process.  This first batch of ten (10) students will go to Malawi on 7th September 2023 and the second batch to Türkiye later. 

 

The award ceremony was graced by the Honourable Minister of MoHERST, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Yusupha Touray (who also served as the Chair of the occasion), Chairman and members of the Scholarship Advisory Board, awardees and Staff of the Ministry. Dr. Touray emphasized the need to institutionalize national development by developing and strengthening relevant training institutes in The Gambia.

 

“Go and conquer and come back to develop this country,” was the key message of the Hon. Gomez. 

 

The Hon Minister went on to add that the scholarships are targeted based on the country’s development agenda of the fisheries and agribusiness sector.

 

Furthermore, the Chairman of the Scholarship Advisory Board, Mr. Karamo S. Bojang congratulated the Ministry for acquiring this scholarship package through its bilateral relations. He informed that applicants underwent a transparent screening process involving calls for application, shortlisting, interviews and the final award. Thus, he congratulated the awardees and stated that they should be proud of their achievement. 

 

Mr. Sanna K. Danso, a scholarship recipient, thanked the Ministry for giving them this significant learning opportunity. 

 

“We will live up to the expectation and make the Ministry and The Gambia proud,” he said.  

 

Upon completion of their studies, the students are expected to serve in the University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology’s Agribusiness and Fisheries TVET Centers that are being established in Sapu, CRR South and Gunjur, WCR respectively. 

 

These centres will provide the youth of this country with the requisite skills for community and national development.
