On Tuesday, 11th July 2023, the Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Hon. Professor Pierre Gomez, together with his Permanent Secretary Dr Yusupha Touray, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Admin & Finance) Mr Madi O. Jatta and Director of Science Technology and Innovation Mr Samba Sowe, visited Gunjur to identify a suitable site to house The Gambia’s first-ever TVET Centre on Fisheries.
This development came after the official inauguration of the Committee tasked with the development of a full proposal on a Fisheries TVET Centre on the 19th of April, 2023.
During his visit, Hon. Gomez and team were taken on a guided tour by the Alkalo of Gunjur and some members of the community. The Ministry is pleased to inform that a site has been identified and thus, they look forward to working with the community elders to finalize the allocation and their development partners for the construction phase to begin.
Once operational, the TVET Centre on Fisheries will offer programs in:
- Fisheries Management,
- Fishing and Fishing Gear Technology
- Post Harvest Technology and Processing
- Aquaculture
According to the Minister, this will provide opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship in the fisheries sector likewise, develop relevant capacity for the management and development of the fisheries sector in The Gambia.
