18th May, 2022: The Honourable Minister of Higher Education and his team received a hearty welcome from management and staff of The University of The Gambia during his familiarization visit. As former Deputy Vice Chancellor of UTG, the Minister was pleased to be ‘back home’.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Herbert Robinson, describes Hon. Prof. Gomez, as a strong believer in higher education who is highly qualified for the position.
Prof. Robinson gave a run-down of developments the University has embarked on. These include the development of a;
- Center for Transitional Justice and Sustainable Peace and;
- Center of Sustainable Development and Policy Studies.
The Minister, Hon. Gomez, was pleased by the reception and reiterates his stance in making sure UTG Faraba Batang campus is delivered. He reminded that the message for lot 1 to be completed by September/October 2022 was well delivered during this visit to Faraba.
According to him, having lot 1 ready, will solve many issues in terms of resources and facilities for students. Meanwhile, Hon. Gomez calls on the support of UTG in ensuring higher education is well provided for in the country.
Giving the vote of thanks, the President of the UTG Students’ Union, Mr Lagamy Gumaneh, expressed delight at the appointment of Prof. Gomez as Minister of Higher Education. He went on to state that as expectations are high, there is confidence of his delivery as was manifest during his tenure at the University.
From there, the Minister and team were led to a tour around the UTG campus to;
- School of Journalism & Digital Media: Laboratories and Studios,
- School of ITC
- Directorate of West African Science Service on Climate Change and Adopted Land Use (WASCAL).
