In a significant move to strengthen equity and operational capacity within The Gambia’s higher education sector, the Honourable Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology, Professor Pierre Gomez, presided over the handover of the Brikama Chancery Building to the University of Education, The Gambia (UEG).
This strategic decision, formalised on Saturday, 4th October 2025, reaffirms the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that all public universities have the infrastructure needed to thrive. The handover addresses a historical imbalance, recognising that while sister institutions UTG and USET have benefitted from new campuses, UEG’s growth has been constrained by a lack of dedicated administrative space.
The Chancery building, originally constructed by UEG, will now serve as the university's main administration block. This move will provide critical office space for the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor, and management team, who are currently sharing facilities, thereby enabling them to carry out their functions more effectively.
The Hon. Minister expressed his appreciation to the University of The Gambia (UTG) and the University of Science, Engineering and Technology (USET), the building's current occupants, for their understanding and collaborative spirit. He appealed for their continued support to ensure a smooth and timely transition for UEG over the coming weeks.
In a unifying note, it was confirmed that the AUF Centre of Employability, a vital national resource located within the Chancery, will remain operational and accessible to all institutions.
Vice Chancellors from all three universities welcomed the move. The VC of UTG assured full support for the handover process, while the VC of USET thanked UTG for their past support. The VC of UEG commended the Ministry for fostering a spirit of teamwork and togetherness across the sector.
The visit concluded with a tour of the facilities, marking a pivotal step towards a more balanced and collaborative future for Gambian higher education
