The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) has announced the launch of the AIMS Innovation Challenge: The Gambia Edition 2026 as part of activities marking the inauguration of the new AIMS Senegal Satellite Campus in The Gambia.

The 72-hour hybrid hackathon, comprising 48 hours of online collaboration and a final in-person session, aims to bring together scientists, researchers, engineers, entrepreneurs, and innovators to develop practical deep-tech solutions addressing Africa’s pressing development challenges.

Participants will focus on five key thematic areas: AgriTech and Food Security, HealthTech and Prevention, FinTech and Financial Inclusion, CleanTech and Renewable Energy, and EdTech and Skills Development.

The initiative seeks to transform scientific research into scalable ventures capable of delivering real-world impact. Top-performing teams will gain direct entry into the AIMS Incubator, where they will receive six months of intensive incubation, seed funding opportunities, cloud infrastructure and compute credits, as well as introductions to African and international venture capital partners.

The competition is open to pre-formed teams of two to four members, including university students, academic researchers, STEM professionals, and members of the African diaspora worldwide.

Applications close on 15 June 2026, while the hackathon will take place from 21 to 23 June 2026.

The challenge underscores AIMS’ commitment to advancing scientific innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development across Africa through cutting-edge research and technology-driven solutions.
