MINISTRY OF HIGHER EDUCATION, RESEARCH, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (MoHERST) CLARIFIES TRANSPORT SUPPORT FOR UTG STUDENTS

Banjul, The Gambia – Tuesday, 14 April 2026 – The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST) has taken note of recent concerns raised by University of The Gambia (UTG) students regarding bus transport to the Faraba Banta Campus. The Ministry wishes to reassure the student body and the general public of the Government’s unwavering commitment to accessible education and student welfare.

Contrary to the impression that limited support exists, the Ministry wishes to clarify that the Government of The Gambia is currently subsidising a dedicated transport scheme for UTG students travelling to the Faraba Banta Campus. Under this arrangement between MoHERST and the Gambia Transport Service Company (GTSC), students are required to pay only GMD10 per trip from Westfield to the Faraba Banta Campus. The Government covers the remaining substantial cost, amounting to a total subsidy of GMD 36 million per year for twenty GTSC buses.

This initiative is a key component of the broader Higher Education Transformation Agenda, which aims to remove financial barriers to learning and improve the overall student experience at Gambian tertiary institutions.

Furthermore, to address the long-term accommodation challenges and reduce daily commute pressures, the Ministry is actively working with development partners, including Brighter Futures, to establish modern student dormitories. These facilities are currently being planned for development at both the Faraba Banta Campus (for UTG) and the Brikama Campus (for the University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology – USET and the University of Education, The Gambia).

MoHERST remains dedicated to working with all stakeholders to ensure that higher education in The Gambia is accessible, affordable, and conducive to academic success.
