The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST), in partnership with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), today officially opened a two-day capacity-building workshop at the University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology (USET).
Delivering the keynote on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Technical), Mucktarr M.Y. Darboe, underscored the urgent need to promote mentorship, inclusive pedagogy, and gender mainstreaming in STEM and TVET. He highlighted that women and girls remain underrepresented in these fields due to systemic barriers, calling for deliberate efforts to create equitable learning environments.
The workshop forms part of the MoHERST–COL collaboration aimed at strengthening women’s participation in STEM and TVET through mentorship frameworks, policy review, and institutional capacity building.
Participants, including lecturers, administrators, and gender focal points, were urged to become agents of change by applying the knowledge gained to transform their institutions.
The two-day training will focus on practical strategies to enhance inclusive teaching, strengthen mentorship structures, and advance gender equality in higher education.
