The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST), under the leadership of the Honourable Minister, Professor Pierre Gomez, has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening The Gambia’s healthcare system through sustained investment in medical education, as 54 new doctors were officially sworn into the profession.
Delivering the keynote address at the ceremony, Professor Gomez described the occasion as a moment of national pride and a significant milestone in advancing the country’s healthcare delivery system.
The event, which marked the swearing-in of the 19th cohort of medical graduates from the University of The Gambia School of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, was held at Kairaba Beach Hotel. The cohort comprises 54 graduates, including 28 women and 26 men, reflecting growing gender inclusivity in the medical field.
Professor Gomez commended the graduates for their resilience and dedication throughout their rigorous seven-year training, noting that their achievement represents both personal success and national progress.
He further highlighted the critical role of MoHERST’s scholarship programme, through which many of the graduates were supported, emphasizing that government investment in human capital remains central to national development.
The Minister also underscored ongoing efforts to transform medical education in The Gambia, particularly the development of the Faraba Banta Campus. He described the project as a landmark investment that will provide state-of-the-art facilities for training healthcare professionals and position the country as a regional hub for medical education.
Professor Gomez challenged the newly sworn-in doctors to go beyond clinical practice by embracing research, innovation, and critical thinking in addressing emerging health challenges, including the rise in non-communicable diseases.
While acknowledging global opportunities for medical professionals, he urged the graduates to contribute meaningfully to national development, reminding them that The Gambia has invested in their training and looks forward to their service.
The Minister concluded by encouraging the graduates to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, compassion, and integrity in their practice.
MoHERST reaffirmed its continued commitment to supporting the development of a skilled and responsive healthcare workforce to improve service delivery across the country.
