The Honorable Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Professor Pierre Gomez, has officially launched the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Banjul Satellite Campus, describing it as a major milestone in advancing science, technology, research and innovation in The Gambia.
Speaking at the launch ceremony held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre (SDKJICC) in Bijilo, the Minister said the establishment of the satellite campus demonstrates the Government’s commitment to investing in knowledge, developing human capital and preparing young Gambians for a rapidly evolving global economy.
He noted that the event, which coincided with Science Week activities including robotics competitions and science outreach programmes, reflects ongoing efforts to inspire more students to pursue careers in mathematics, science and technology.
Professor Gomez described the partnership between the Government of The Gambia and AIMS as strategic and timely, stating that Africa’s transformation depends on investing in education, research, innovation and the talents of its young people. He praised AIMS for nurturing thousands of scientists, innovators and entrepreneurs across the continent and said the Banjul Satellite Campus will connect Gambian students and researchers to one of Africa’s leading scientific networks.
The Minister highlighted that the campus will be located at the former School of Journalism Kanifing Campus under the auspices of the University of The Gambia. It will offer world-class postgraduate education in mathematical sciences, data science and artificial intelligence while supporting research, innovation and the development of AI applications that respond to national development priorities.
He further explained that the campus will strengthen the capacity of universities and educators, support professional development for public and private sector practitioners, promote research collaboration and foster innovation capable of addressing national and regional challenges.
Looking to the future, Professor Gomez said the Government envisions the AIMS Banjul Satellite Campus growing into a regional Centre of Excellence for advanced learning, research, innovation and entrepreneurship. He added that its programmes will align with the Gambia National Qualifications Framework, with a technical study visit to the AIMS Campus in Dakar planned to support its establishment.
Expressing appreciation to the leadership of AIMS, development partners, universities and stakeholders, the Minister thanked them for their continued collaboration in strengthening tertiary and higher education in The Gambia.
Officially launching the campus, Honorable Professor Pierre Gomez expressed confidence that the initiative will equip future generations with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world. He called on all stakeholders to work together to ensure the campus becomes a centre where excellence is nurtured, innovation flourishes and scientific discovery contributes to national and continental development.
