
The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST), in collaboration with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) and the University of Science, Engineering and Technology (USET), has officially opened a Capacity Building Workshop on Mentorship aimed at increasing the participation of females in STEM and TVET.
Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, the Deputy Permanent Secretary – Technical, Dr. Samba Sowe, reaffirmed Government’s commitment to empowering girls and women through structured mentorship programmes in tertiary and higher education.
He stated that the initiative aligns with national gender policies and the Recovery-Focused National Development Plan (2023–2027), noting that mentorship remains a key tool for increasing access, retention, and success of females in STEM and TVET fields.
Dr. Sowe expressed appreciation to the Commonwealth of Learning for its continued partnership and commended USET for hosting and facilitating the workshop. He also highlighted ongoing efforts under the pilot project, including nationwide outreach and the development of a documentary showcasing female participation in STEM and TVET.
He further urged participants to actively engage in the sessions and contribute to strengthening mentorship systems within their institutions.
The workshop, which runs from 9–11 June 2026 at USET Brikama Campus, continues with sessions focused on building effective mentorship strategies and promoting gender inclusion in STEM and TVET.
