The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST) proudly announces that the Honourable Professor Pierre Gomez, Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, has been awarded the Africa Distinguished Public Service Award by the All-Africa Students’ Union (AASU).

The award, presented in Banjul on February 16, 2026, recognizes the Minister’s exemplary leadership and the significant transformation achieved within The Gambia’s higher education sector. Under his leadership, the Ministry has implemented strategic reforms and key initiatives, including major infrastructure development projects such as the construction of modern, state-of-the-art facilities at the University of The Gambia (UTG).

AASU further commended the Ministry’s progress in curriculum reform, the strengthening of research and innovation frameworks, the expansion of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and the increase in scholarship opportunities for Gambian students. These achievements are aligned with the national development agenda of His Excellency Adama Barrow, which emphasizes punctuality, productivity, professionalism, and efficiency in public service delivery.

MoHERST reaffirms its unwavering commitment to sustaining reforms that enhance access, quality, relevance, and global competitiveness in higher education. The Ministry remains dedicated to fostering innovation, strengthening human capital development, and advancing national progress through a responsive, inclusive, and forward-looking education system.
