The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MOHERST) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting integrity-driven research, scientific innovation and regional collaboration as key pillars for national development.

Representing the Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Honourable Professor Pierre Gomez, the Permanent Secretary, Ms. Isatou Auber, delivered the Minister’s statement at the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science (WAPCMLS) Conference held in The Gambia.

Delivering a speech on The Role of Fellows as Stewards of Knowledge and Integrity in Advancing Research for National Development on behalf of the Minister, the Permanent Secretary conveyed Honourable Professor Pierre Gomez’s call for Fellows to serve as stewards of knowledge and integrity in advancing research that responds to national and regional development priorities.

In the statement, the Minister noted that fellowship represents not only professional recognition but also a call to intellectual leadership, ethical responsibility and national service.

The statement underscored the importance of aligning research with development goals, emphasizing that universities and research institutions must serve as hubs of innovation contributing directly to national progress.

It further highlighted ethical research conduct, transparency, accountability and the translation of scientific innovations into sustainable solutions, noting that research remains a powerful instrument for economic growth, improved public health and technological advancement.

On the conference theme of laboratory stewardship and antimicrobial resistance, the Minister emphasized the crucial role of laboratory systems in diagnostics, surveillance and evidence-based interventions, while calling for strengthened diagnostic capacity, quality assurance and antimicrobial stewardship.

The statement also underscored mentorship, postgraduate training and regional collaboration as critical to sustaining scientific progress and building resilient research systems across West Africa.

Reaffirming government’s commitment to strengthening research and innovation ecosystems, the Minister urged Fellows to continue advancing excellence, integrity and science-driven solutions for sustainable development.
