Mr. Anthony G. Mendy
Director of Tertiary and Higher Education
Mr. Mendy began his career as a teacher at St. Therese’s Primary School from 1991 to 1992. With the enthusiasm and passion garnered, he joined the Gambia College in 1992 and graduated with a Primary Teacher’s Certificate in 1994. As a qualified teacher, he taught at St. Joseph’s Ex-Pupils Primary School and served as the Acting Deputy Head Teacher at Diabugu Primary School, Sandu District, Upper River Region.
After three years, he was enrolled at the Gambia College from 1997 to 1999 and received the Higher Teacher’s Certificate. After his graduation, he worked at the newly established Bakoteh Upper Basic School as the Acting Vice Principal as well as Agricultural Science Teacher from 1999 to 2001. Mr. Mendy was quite instrumental in molding a great number of children and commanded great respect from both parents and students.
In 2005, he obtained his BA programme in Development Studies at the University of The Gambia (UTG) and was awarded the most outstanding student in the Social Sciences. His administrative and technical expertise became evident when he was transferred to the then Ministry of Education in 2006 as an Education Officer. With the establishment of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology in 2007, he joined the new Ministry as a Senior Education Officer.
Notably, he was one of the founding staff of the new Ministry. With dedication and hard work, he rose to the rank of Principal Higher Education Officer in 2011. He pursued his Master of Education in Educational Administration at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and graduated in 2013.
Mr. Mendy served in many Committees and Boards as a Secretary, Focal Point or Member. He coordinated the development of the National TVET Policy as the Activity Focal Point. He participated actively in the review and validation of the report of the feasibility study on ECOWAS Educational Agency held in Togo.
Some of the Committees he served included the Committee for the Establishment of Institutions of Higher Learning, NAQAA Lead Quality Assurance Committee (QAC), Commonwealth of Learning (CoL), National TVET Committee, Diocesan Education Commission, Expatriate Quota Allocation Board, Gambia College Transformation Committee, Gambia RISE Project just to name a few. He also attended and represented the Ministry in high level meetings, conferences, workshops, and seminars both locally and internationally from 2008 to date.
Mr. Anthony G. Mendy is currently the Third Director of the Directorate of Tertiary and Higher Education of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology.
