The Erasmus+ National Engagement, attended by the Honorable Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology, Professor Pierre Gomez, alongside the EU Ambassador, Vice Chancellors from various universities, Deputy Provosts, and and other dignitaries, marked a significant stride toward enhancing academic cooperation between The Gambia and the European Union. The engagement centered on unlocking the full potential of the Erasmus+ Programme, with a focus on building institutional alliances, promoting student and staff exchanges, and elevating academic standards through international collaboration.

Professor Gomez emphasized that Erasmus+ transcends traditional academic initiatives, describing it as “a testament to unity, diversity, and shared opportunity.” He commended the European Union and its Ambassador for their dedication to ensuring Gambian institutions and students gain meaningful access to the programme.

The Minister highlighted Erasmus+ as a catalyst for learning, strategic development, innovation, and capacity building within higher education. He urged Gambian universities including the University of The Gambia (UTG), Civil Service University (CSU), University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology (USET), and University of Education of The Gambia (UEG) to take a more proactive role in leveraging the opportunities available.

A presentation during the event outlined Erasmus+ funding priorities, which include support for higher education, vocational training, and virtual exchange initiatives. A newly introduced capacity-building component expands access for African universities, enabling Gambian institutions to join global consortia and strengthen curriculum development.

In his closing remarks, Professor Gomez called on educators, students, and policymakers to actively pursue Erasmus+ opportunities, reminding them that success requires initiative: “It is not given to you on a silver platter, you must make it happen.” His message reaffirmed the government’s commitment to partnering with the EU in reshaping The Gambia’s higher education sector through global engagement and academic excellence.
